High culture in Split

Thursday, 1st August

We had a relaxed start to the day, making our own breakfast for the first time in 10 days. Tea and toast – I must have been missing it, because it tasted so good!

Another very hot day, so we ambled along the coast road, away from the town to visit the Museum/Gallery of Ivan Mestrovic, a Croatian sculptor. The gallery is housed in his family home, which was donated to the state so that everyone could enjoy his work.

The gallery is opposite the water, in a very beautiful building, built in the ’30s, surrounded by a leafy garden.

The sculptures are magnificent, and there are hundreds of them. Stark and powerful. We had never heard of him, but apparently he is famous. His work is all around Split and it is pretty amazing. The giant statue of Gregory of Nin, ((who is credited with reviving/saving the Croatian language back in the day), was made by Ivan Mestrovic.

There is an open air café from which you can watch the water, the swimmers and the luxury yachts. It looks like there are no sandy beaches in this area, but people  use the rocks and concrete platforms, just as we lie on the sand.

After the art experience, we strolled back to the apartment and read for a while. The next big decision will be where to go for dinner.

Tough life!
